The deciding factor is distance from salt water. Homes near the ocean, the Intracoastal, and the Lake Worth Lagoon need aluminum, because salt air corrodes steel panels and voids their warranties. Aluminum is resistant to salt corrosion. In these areas we would install 0.032 inch aluminum in Englert's mechanically seamed Series 1300, and the most exposed waterfront properties step up to the thicker 0.040 inch Series 2000 structural system. Away from the water, 24 gauge Galvalume steel with a Kynar 500 finish is the right buy. It costs less than aluminum and performs just as well without salt in the air, which covers the western half of the county, from the neighborhoods off Okeechobee Boulevard out through Royal Palm Beach and Loxahatchee.
